Three in One Conference
Attendees at the 2008 APME annual conference in Las Vegas will effectively get three conventions for the price of one.
For the first time, the 2,500-member Society for News Design, an association of visual journalists, will meet at the same time and in the same hotel as the Associated Press Managing Editors, an organization of editors at the nearly 1,600 newspapers that belong to The Associated Press in the United States and the Canadian Press in Canada.
The site of the joint 2008 meeting is the Red Rock Casino, Resort and Spa. The Society for News Design's 30th Annual Workshop and Exhibition, expected to draw 600-700 designers, illustrators, graphics reporters, photo editors and other visual journalists, will take place Sept. 7-9. APME, which usually attracts more than 400 editors and news managers to its Annual Conference, will meet Sept. 8-11. APME's gathering will include the two-day Associated Press Photo Managers Annual Conference.
APME, APPM and SND will share some joint sessions, including an evening event sponsored by the Freedom Forum, and open their individual breakouts to all attendees. Exhibitors will be invited to a shared exhibit space, and members of all groups will mingle at some social functions. Each group will hold traditional fundraisers for its 501(c)(3) educational foundation, the APME Foundation and the SND Foundation.
Both APME and SND are nonprofit organizations. The Associated Press Managing Editors, which began meeting in 1933, works closely with The Associated Press to foster journalism excellence and to support a national network for the training and development of editors who will run multimedia newsrooms in the 21st Century.
The Society for News Design, founded in 1979, has members from more than 50 countries. Its mission is to enhance communication around the world through excellence in visual journalism. APME is based at the worldwide headquarters of The Associated Press in New York City. SND is headquartered in North Kingstown, R.I.
